About the Clinic

This semester-long course immerses students in criminal defense practice. Student attorneys learn and apply interviewing, counseling, negotiation, fact investigation, legal research and writing, oral advocacy, and trial preparation. Students also explore systemic issues in the criminal legal system through casework and a weekly seminar. 

What You’ll Do

Students may appear in court for hearings such as arraignments, pretrial conferences, motion hearings, sentencing hearings, and trials, and participate in at least one weekly meeting with their supervisor. 

Requirements

Evidence (Law 113) and Ethics and Professional Responsibility (Law 114) are required as pre- or co-requisites. Limited to students who have completed three semesters or more and are eligible to receive a student practice license in Iowa. This clinic cannot be taken simultaneously with the Prosecutorial Internship. 

Advanced Criminal Defense Clinic

Students who successfully complete the Criminal Defense Clinic may continue for an additional semester with faculty permission; credits are determined by the student and faculty supervisor.

For Prospective Clients

The Criminal Defense Clinic only works with court-appointed cases. Calling or walking into the clinic will not grant you legal representation. If you need criminal representation, request a public defender and complete the state paperwork required to qualify.
