Founded in 2009 through a generous $3 million gift from Bill Buchanan, BN’57, and his wife Jean, the Buchanan Center is committed to developing innovative leaders across all fields. Bill, a proud actuarial science graduate and former chairman of Unified Life Insurance Company, is an active and loyal Drake University supporter. His contributions have shaped the future of entrepreneurship at our university. 

Entrepreneurship Minor Offered by the Buchanan Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Buchanan Center offers the entrepreneurship minor, available to all Drake students, regardless of major. Whether your goal is to launch a business, drive innovation within an existing organization, or spark social impact, this minor will equip you with the mindset, skills, and network to make it happen. 

Designed to help you think like an entrepreneur, the curriculum blends classroom learning with real-world experience so you can turn your passion into marketable skills and viable ventures. 

 As an entrepreneurship minor, you’ll gain: 

• Mentorship from industry professionals 

• Opportunities to pitch startup or product ideas 

• Internships with startups and established companies in Greater Des Moines 

• Networking connections with Des Moines’ growing entrepreneurial ecosystem 
• Support and resources to explore or grow early-stage ventures
