The College of Arts and Sciences strives to recognize the many contributions and accomplishments of our outstanding students and faculty.

All departments recognize students annually with area-specific awards at the Arts and Sciences Honors Convocation, and the College has several annual awards intended to recognize students and faculty as part of the college as a whole.

Visit the links below for details about college awards, guidelines for nomination, and see lists of past winners.

Student Awards

The E.A. Sheslow Prize for Distinguished Leadership recognizes the achievements of students in the College of Arts and Sciences who:

  • are in their junior year, (graduating the following fall or spring semester--students graduating this May are not eligible);
  • are working toward a B.S., B.F.A., B.M., B.M.E. or B.A. degree to be awarded by the College of Arts and Sciences;
  • have demonstrated leadership
  • have a record of performance in student life activities or on- and off-campus employment.

Eligible nominees will be invited to submit a resume, an essay on leadership, and three supporting letters of recommendation. Awards will be based upon the committee’s evaluation of these materials. One prize of $1,750 will be awarded. The award is presented at the College of Arts and Sciences Honors Convocation ceremony during the spring semester.

Nominations

Nominations should be forwarded to ask.as@drake.edu.
Nominated students will be notified and invited to submit required supporting materials.

Each year, the Center for the Humanities confers the Edward C. Truman Award upon a Drake University undergraduate not yet in his or her fourth year at Drake who has made outstanding achievements, both in and out of the classroom, in the humanities. The Award is endowed in the name of Edward C. Truman, a Drake alumnus, a well-known composer of incidental music and scores for television programs in the 'fifties, 'sixties, and 'seventies and a former network music director.

Nominations can be made by any Drake faculty member. After receiving nominations, the Center requests a statement of purpose from each nominee (approximately 1,000 words). The cash award is given by a representative of the Center for the Humanities at the Arts and Sciences Spring Honors Convocation.

Nominations

Nominations must come from a current member of Drake's faculty. Please send a letter of nomination outlining the nominee's Humanities-related achievements and potential for future development as a student and practitioner of Humanistic inquiry. Letters should be sent electronically to the Center's Director. Nomination letters will be read as part of the nominees file, and thus letters that speak to relevant work undertaken both in and out of the classroom, and that report on the student's achievements in detail will offer the Board a firmer basis for deliberation than letters that report generally on a relatively more narrow range of achievements. In addition to the nomination letter, nominees may submit one additional letter of support along with their statement of purpose to be considered as part of their nomination. The Center will hold the names of nominators in confidence; however, anonymity is not required of the nominator. Accordingly, nominators are welcome to discuss their nominations with nominees and to advise them on submitting their statements of purpose.

The Center will confirm that each nominee is an eligible undergraduate in good standing before soliciting supporting materials.

The Jan Fleming Award recognizes a senior fine arts student who while at Drake University has demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of fine arts in the community.  This commitment can have been exhibited by raising public awareness of possibilities for local arts experiences and/or by making connections with the community regarding arts opportunities provided by Drake University.  The recipient will be chosen by the chairs of the fine arts programs at Drake University and will receive a monetary award of $350.  This award is provided through the generosity of Jan Fleming, Drake graduate and author of Grotesques in Des Moines…Iowa and Abroad.
