Three Drake Kinesiology majors test body composition in one of the campus's exercise labs

Kinesiology Major

If you’re moved to help others, study the science of human movement at Drake.

Program Options

Drake’s Kinesiology curriculum emphasizes anatomy and physiology through the lens of exercise science, sports medicine, and related fields.

B.S. in Kinesiology

The Kinesiology curriculum includes in-depth scientific training in human anatomy and physiology. Exercise science core classes cover topics such as wellness and nutrition, muscle structure and function, and sports psychology.

Pre-Professional Studies

Study with confidence: our pre-professional guides let you tailor the B.S. in Kinesiology curriculum to match entry requirements for graduate programs in physical therapy, medicine, dentistry, optometry, and many other allied healthcare fields.

Meet the Faculty

Kinesiology blends several different disciplines, and you’ll study with professors whose backgrounds are accordingly diverse. Department faculty teach, mentor, and collaborate with you on projects and research.

Outside the Classroom

Kinesiology is, literally, a hands-on profession—and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to get hands-on experiences with your studies at Drake.

For a research project, one Kinesiology major bounces a ball down a hallway in a Drake laboratory, while another student takes notes on their laptop

Research

See where your curiosity takes you in classroom labs or research alongside faculty. You’ll collaborate with professors on novel projects investigating topics like the impact of age and exercise training on vascular function, or the ability of runners to perceive differences in running shoe mass.

Publication and Presentation Opportunities

Peer-reviewed journals often publish work by Drake Kinesiology students, who also present their findings at the annual Drake University Conference on Undergraduate Research in the Sciences (DUCURS) and other regional or national conferences.

Student Organizations

Explore career options through the Pre-Med Club, build community through Women in STEM, or train with fellow Drake students as part of the Drake Weight Lifting Club.

Pre-Professional Preparation

Drake’s Kinesiology major exposes you to the discipline from multiple perspectives—from the clinic to the gym to the lab. And if you’re considering a professional program, you’ll meet with a dedicated advisor to discuss test prep resources and other ways to enhance your application.

Careers & Skills

Since Drake launched the Kinesiology program in 2015, half of our graduates have attended professional schools for physical therapy, medicine, nursing, athletic training, or occupational therapy. Other recent graduates have pursued careers in personal training, strength and conditioning, biomedical engineering, sport psychology, or sport product design for major athletic brands.

Whichever path you choose, you’ll find demand for your skills: many kinesiology-related fields are experiencing double-digit job growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“As one of the first students in the Drake Kinesiology program, I can tell you it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made for myself. The faculty and staff have an abundance of knowledge they want to pass down to their students. They’re there to help you, and they truly want to see you succeed.”
