Drake Law Graduate Student

At Drake Law School, career development is a partnership.

We understand that career paths are constantly changing and career development is an ongoing, lifelong process. The Career Development Office's services and support don't end when you graduate. Drake Law School offers career counseling, job postings, and networking events to all alumni.

At the same time, our greatest career resources are our alumni. Students are eager to learn about the legal profession and specific practice areas from practicing attorneys. Our students benefit tremendously when alumni share their knowledge and experience. We would be honored and extremely appreciative if you agreed to spend a little of your valuable time assisting the next generation of Drake lawyers.

How You Can Help Students

Suit Yourself Clothing Closet

Suit Yourself is a professional clothing closet that students can access for interviews, internships, moot court, or other competitions or events. Please consider donating clean, gently used professional attire or accessories.

At this time, we are at capacity with donations. However, we are in need of accessories, men's and women's shoes, and women's plus-size clothing. Donations of clothing racks are also welcome. Please consider donating your professional attire to Dress For Success, Men on the Move, or any of the community resources in Des Moines. We are unable to provide receipts for items donated. Thank you!

Suit Yourself Information

Suit Yourself will be available to all students in need of professional attire for interviews, internships, moot court, or other competitions.

How Does it Work?

  • This is a free program for all Drake Law School students.
  • Students may try on and choose their clothing before taking it home, subject to garment availability.
  • We ask students to please take only what they need and plan to wear so that there is an adequate supply for other students.
  • Students may keep the clothing; however, if you find that you are not using the item as you thought you might, or if, for some reason, it doesn't fit, you can return the clothing if it is in the same shape as you received it, so that someone else can use it.

Where is Suit Yourself located?

Suit Yourself is located in room LL04 on the lower level of the Law Library.

Can’t Find What You Need?

Drake University also contracts with Dress for Success in Des Moines for professional clothing. Contact CDO for a referral to access their collection of suits. In addition, you can contact Men on the Move in Des Moines to access their extensive wardrobe.

Thank you to Victoria Cleaners for offering to help students with their items. Contact CDO for details.

Suit Yourself welcomes donations of gently used professional suits and attire. If you are planning to come to campus for an upcoming program, interview, or event, you may drop your donation in the Career Development Office (Opperman) or in the Gorsche Student Services Suite (Cartwright).  Feel free to contact us in advance to let us know you will be coming.

At this time, we are at capacity with donations. Please consider donating your items to Dress For Success or Men on the Move. Thank you!

Donation Information

This professional clothing donation may be tax-deductible; however, we are unable to provide receipts for your donation.

Please contact the Career Development Office at law-career@drake.edu or any of the CDO staff with questions.

Panelist or Speaker

Throughout the school year, CDO presents programs focused on different practice areas and employment settings, or professional development and well-being. Most programs follow an informal format allowing for interactive participation.

Mentoring

Each fall, CDO assigns 2L and 3L students an attorney mentor. The mentoring program kicks off at a social event, after which the student and attorney can maintain the relationship however it best suits them.

Mock Interviews

Mock interviews are one of the most important tools that a law student can use to improve their job search skills.  Our interviewers commit to an evening of short interviews followed by constructive feedback to the student.

Speed Networking

This is one of our most popular events each spring!  Meet multiple students in a fun flurry of activity while they practice networking skills.

If any of these alumni activities interest you, please contact the CDO.

How We Can Help You

Career Counseling

Alumni can schedule one-on-one career counseling sessions with the CDO staff at Drake Law School. Resume and cover letter review services are also available. To schedule an appointment, contact the CDO or an individual career counselor.

Job Postings

The CDO provides free continued access to Symplicity, a password-protected job database with hundreds of postings. All alumni have access to job postings. Just sign into Symplicity, click "Alumni" and enter your password information (which you can reset if needed). If you need additional assistance, contact CDO - please allow up to 48 hours for a response.

Networking Events

The CDO and Alumni Relations host several networking events for Drake Law alumni throughout the year.  For more information on upcoming events, contact the CDO or Alumni Relations offices.
