Porterhouse wasn’t just Drake’s live mascot—he was a once‑in‑a‑generation Bulldog who forever changed the spirit of campus. Crowned Drake’s Beautiful Bulldog in 2009, Porterhouse quickly became a beloved fixture at athletic events, campus programs, and community gatherings, capturing hearts with his gentle nature, calm demeanor, and unmistakable presence.

From Beautiful Bulldog to Beloved Mascot

Porterhouse’s journey began when he won Drake University’s Beautiful Bulldog Contest during the Drake Relays in 2009. While most contest winners return to everyday life after Relays week, Porterhouse’s story unfolded differently. He continued to receive requests to attend events across campus and the community, and his connection with students, alumni, and fans quickly grew.

Recognizing his unique temperament and ability to thrive in busy, high‑energy environments, Drake University invited Porterhouse to continue serving as the live mascot.

With the support of his owners, Erin and Kevin Bell, Porterhouse stepped into the role full‑time—becoming the face of Drake pride and setting a new standard for what a live mascot could be.

A Bulldog Who Loved the Spotlight—and the People

Porterhouse was known for his incredibly gentle and patient personality. He was comfortable in loud arenas, large crowds, and long event schedules, greeting everyone from small children to longtime alumni with the same calm affection.

Some of his most iconic moments were leading the Drake men’s basketball team onto the court at the Knapp Center—chasing the basketball across the floor and igniting the crowd before tipoff. These moments helped cement Porterhouse as a symbol of joy, tradition, and Bulldog pride.

When he was on campus, students crowded around him like a celebrity—or a presidential candidate. Porterhouse radiated that pride, excitement, loyalty, and kindness that unites all Bulldogs.”
