Porterhouse

Porterhouse wasn’t just Drake’s live mascot—he was a once‑in‑a‑generation Bulldog who forever changed the spirit of campus. Crowned Drake’s Beautiful Bulldog in 2009, Porterhouse quickly became a beloved fixture at athletic events, campus programs, and community gatherings, capturing hearts with his gentle nature, calm demeanor, and unmistakable presence.

“If you met Porterhouse, you know the impact that a live mascot can have on school spirit. I remember how the crowds in the Knapp Center cheered when Porterhouse stepped onto the court. When he was on campus, students crowded around him like a celebrity—or a presidential candidate. Porterhouse radiated that pride, excitement, loyalty, and kindness that unites all Bulldogs.”

A Legacy That Shaped the Live Mascot Program

Porterhouse served as Drake University’s live mascot from 2009 until his sudden passing in December 2013. His impact on campus was profound and tributes poured in from students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fans who had shared moments with him. Through his service, Porterhouse demonstrated that a live mascot could be more than a symbol—it could be a true ambassador for the University, building meaningful connections across campus and beyond.

Though his time as Drake’s mascot was brief, Porterhouse’s legacy endures. He remains a beloved figure in Drake history—a reminder of the joy, comfort, and sense of belonging that a single Bulldog brought to an entire community.

Following his passing, Drake University honored Porterhouse’s memory and legacy, and his influence directly shaped the creation of the official Live Mascot Program. Griff I, introduced in 2015 as Drake’s first official live mascot, followed in Porterhouse’s paw prints—continuing the standard of care, temperament, and connection Porterhouse established.
