What Is Your Best Piece of Advice for First-Generation Students?

Hope Bibens

Dean of Cowles Library

The biggest piece of advice I would give to other first generation students would be to find a mentor, build a genuine relationship with çhat person, and stay in touch. Some of the most insightful advice I have ever received came from mentors. Other than that, I would say don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone – whether it’s studying abroad or taking a job in a new place after graduation, give it a try.

Nicholas Kavanaugh

Director of Student Affairs, CPHS

One piece of advice I would give is to embrace your opportunities and community. Find something to get involved in. Go to the athletic event. Schedule the appointment with your advising specialist, faculty mentor, or other support staff. There is always something happening, and there are a lot of people here to help you be successful.
