Drake Opportunities for Gaining Skills in Healthcare

BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare is a program that will introduces you to careers in the health professions by educating you about opportunities in health sciences and inspiring you to explore different pathways.  You will participate in hands-on laboratory experiences, educational sessions, and interactive discussions with students and faculty in the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to understand how to best prepare for a career in healthcare.  Special emphasis is placed on promoting careers in athletic training, occupational therapy, pharmacy and many others.  The overarching goal of this program is to expose you to a wide variety of opportunities within healthcare and educate you about how you can best prepare for a career in the health professions.

Program Goals:

  • Students will learn about careers in the health professions.
  • Students will learn about promoting cultural competence and diversity in healthcare and among health professionals. 
  • Students will learn about the importance of practical lab experiences and begin to develop laboratory skills. 
  • Students will investigate the role of healthcare professionals to gain a better understanding of patient-provider relationships through skill-building exercises.  
  • Students will be able to plan their remaining high school curriculum and extracurricular activities to prepare for a career in healthcare.

Each summer we host an event for high school students that includes staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall for several nights.  Our 2019 camp will be held on Thursday, July 25 through Saturday, July 27, 2019.  BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare takes place at Drake University and will include a number of activities that will help you learn about preparing for a career in the health professions.  Our sessions will include:

  • Career options in healthcare
  • Individual breakout sessions focused on Athletic Training, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy and Health Sciences
  • Lab activities in various areas of health professions
  • Interaction with current students and faculty 
  • Off-campus field trips to local health care organizations
  • College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences programs at Drake 
  • Preparing for college admission
  • Evening recreational activities
  • Staying overnight in an on-campus residence hall
  • Meals on campus

Students must meet the following requirements in order to participate:

  • Must be enrolled as a 10th, 11th or 12th grader during the 2019/2020 academic year
  • Have an interest in careers in healthcare, math and/or science fields

Due to the costs involved in providing an overnight experience on campus, there is a $200 fee for participating in BullD.O.G.S. in Healthcare.  All students that meet the eligibility criteria above are welcome to register for this event.  Financial assistance may be available to students who qualify.  Registration for this event is now open:
