If you are interested in community referrals for counseling or psychological testing, please contact the counseling center at 515-216-5100 to receive a copy of a list of local referral options. Although we are providing this information as a resource, counselors on this list are responsible for maintaining the Code of Ethics and Professional Requirements under their license or supervision. The center does not endorse specific providers.

All referrals out of the counseling center may incur a cost determined by the providers.

Students may also use the strategy below to find a counselor in the area:

  1. Search Psychology Today Therapists-Des Moines
  2. Select “issues” that you would like support on
  3. Select “Insurance” and your respective insurance
  4. Select any other areas you are interested in for a therapist (i.e. race, gender, sexual orientation, etc)
  5. Explore the list for in person/telehealth offerings (based on your needs)
  6. Email the counselor (s) you are interested in seeing and they should contact you about scheduling.

Disability Services

If you notice difficulty related to studying, time management organization, test taking, etc and that is influencing your academic performance, then you may benefit from scheduling an appointment with Disability Services. Your counselor may discuss these services during your services and explore ways to connect you with their services.

Medication Management/Psychiatry

The Counseling Center works in collaboration with the Student Health Center to meet the unique needs of students. If a student is seeing a therapist or is using medication prescribed by another physician and needs medication management, the student can schedule an appointment with a therapist. The counseling center therapist will conduct an intake and discuss referral options for our nurse practioner or psychiatrist.
