According to Drake University’s Sexual Harassment Policy, all Drake faculty and staff who are not exempted (i.e., Student Counseling and Student Health staff) as confidential must notify the Title IX Coordinator if they learn of sexual misconduct (e.g., sexual harassment, sexual violence, sexual assault or sexual exploitation) and/or interpersonal misconduct (e.g., domestic violence, dating violence or stalking) happening to a student.  To share these types of misconduct, you may notify the Title IX Coordinator in person, through phone or email, or through an online report. Upon receiving the information, the Title IX Coordinator will evaluate the information received and determine what further actions should be taken. For example, the Title IX Coordinator will take steps, either directly with the student or through the faculty or staff member, to provide information about the University's policies as well as available health and support resources and options for reporting.  Consider informing the student that you carry this obligation and that you are not confidential, but also share the options for confidential support found on the Title IX website and Student Resources and Reporting page.

Resources

Several resources may be helpful to faculty and staff when communicating with students regarding sexual and interpersonal misconduct:

  • Some helpful tips for What Faculty and Staff Need to Know About Sexual Harassment
  • Learn about campus and community resources by viewing the Student Resources and Reporting, and Employee Resources and Reporting
  • Faculty and instructors, consider using a Syllabus Statement so students can understand your role and learn about confidential resources

If faculty or staff have concerns over discrimination or harassment in the workplace, the University also offers Employee Resources and Reporting.
