Sexual Assault Prevention: Online Education Program

Prevention Education & Programming

  • Training for Adjudicators
  • Sexual Assault Prevention Online Course
  • Prevention Ambassadors
  • Violence Intervention Partners

Drake University strives to create a respectful, safe, and non-threatening environment where its members are able to live, study, and work free from sexual and interpersonal misconduct. In keeping with this goal, Drake requires all students to complete an online educational program on sexual and interpersonal violence prevention. This effort also complies with the Violence Against Women Act and the Office for Civil Rights federal guidelines.

We are using a convenient online format through Everfi’s Sexual Assault Prevention™, designed to help inform and educate students on these important issues.

The training contains sensitive material involving sexual and interpersonal violence. While trigger warnings and resources are provided throughout the program, we understand such programming may be problematic for some viewers. Please contact the Violence Prevention Coordinator at Lynne.Cornelius@drake.edu for support and/or to discuss alternatives for training.

Please note: you will not receive a waiver based on a high level of knowledge of this topic or previous training participation.

Deadlines and Requirements

Students who do not complete the training by October 1 will have a hold placed on their spring registration.

A Drake committee reviewed several online programs to make a final decision on utilizing the Sexual Assault Prevention online course. The Sexual Assault Prevention online course has also been the product of choice in many Iowa institutions of higher education—delivering positive student user feedback—which will position us for uniformity across the state. The Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates online course was designed with undergraduates in mind. The Sexual Assault Prevention for Graduates online course is similar to Undergraduate course, however uses scenarios and content customized to graduate and professional students.

The Sexual Assault Prevention online course promotes student health and safety by educating students about the elements of healthy relationships, the importance of sexual consent, and the role of bystanders in creating safe, healthy communities. The Sexual Assault Prevention online course is a science-based prevention program that offers a confidential, personalized experience for each student, educating them on the issues associated with sexual assault, relationship violence, and stalking while also taking into account their unique perspectives and experiences. The Sexual Assault Prevention online course provides:

  • Key definitions and statistics
  • Reflective and personalized content, including the importance of personal values
  • Bystander skill and confidence-building strategies
  • Drake policies, procedures, resources, and ongoing student leadership opportunities and programs
  • Rich data summaries to inform future programming

  • 72% of students who took the Sexual Assault Prevention online course said they were confident in their ability to support a friend who has been sexually assaulted.
  • 79% said they have a good understanding of the definition of sexual assault.
  • 69% said they can identify warning signs of abuse in dating relationships.
  • 63% said they would feel comfortable intervening if they witnessed abusive behavior.

Please be aware that this program contains situations that involve various types of interpersonal violence, including, and not limited to: sexual harassment, stalking, dating violence, and sexual assault, which may invoke an emotional response. If during the course of completing this program you experience any distress, we encourage you to seek support. If you would like confidential support, a Violence Intervention Partner (VIP) peer-based crisis advocate is available 24 hours a day by calling or texting 515-512-2972, or you can make an appointment with the Counseling Center at 515-271-3864.

If you should need to request in exemption for completing this module due to potential distress, please contact Lynne Cornelius, Violence Prevention Coordinator at Lynne.Cornelius@drake.edu to discuss alternatives to training.

Everfi offers special features to meet individual student needs, including audio/visual options for students that would like the program to run with captions or spoken options for ease of usage. Scenarios are not specific to any particular culture and illustrate a variety of relationships. Everfi also offers a variety of ways that people with different personal attributes might react to those scenarios.

All incoming first year and transfer undergraduate Drake students (spring, summer and fall) are required to complete the Sexual Assault Prevention for Undergraduates online course. All incoming graduate and professional students (spring, summer and fall) are required to complete the Sexual Assault Prevention for Graduates online course. A hold will be placed on your account, which will prevent course registration for the subsequent semester, until Part I of the Sexual Assault Prevention online course has been completed. Holds will be removed Monday through Friday and may take 24-48 hours to be removed.

After you’ve logged into EverFi and go into the Sexual Assault Prevention online course, you will navigate through modules as directed by the video.

You will receive an email inviting you to complete Part 2. Part 2 takes about 15 minutes, and is NOT required. This post survey will help us gather data on what you thought of the program and measure retention of knowledge.

If you choose to take Part 2, it may be completed at any time before the end of the Fall semester.

Part 1 is the only section attached to spring registration; Part 2 is not required. However, participating is extremely valuable—it includes climate feedback, which will help Drake develop better initiatives surrounding sexual and interpersonal violence on campus.

Used at more than 200 colleges and universities across the country, this program will enable the University to gather valuable data about our students for comparison with others institutions. This will be shared with campus stakeholders to improve sexual and interpersonal violence prevention initiatives at Drake. The course includes surveys to help personalize your experience and measure students’ attitudes and behaviors.

All survey responses for Part 1 are confidential. The results are kept by Everfi and are sent to Drake’s administrator of the program in aggregate format, without identifying information and individual student responses.

Should you experience problems, technical support is available 24/7 and can be accessed from the “Help” link within the course. The Drake staff is not available to assist with problems within the program.

Resolve most Issues with these three steps:

  • Disable your pop-up blocker
  • Switch browsers: use Chrome or Firefox when you can instead of Internet Explorer
  • Clear your cache.
  • If you seem stuck, your screen may be zoomed in too much, causing you to miss a prompt or navigation button. To zoom out on a PC, hit "control 0 (zero)" and on a Mac, hit "command 0 (zero)".

Additional Troubleshooting Options:

  • Close all other applications and tabs (e.g., iTunes, Facebook, YouTube, etc.)
  • Full Screen mode: Windows, press F11/Mac, click View menu on the browser, and select Full Screen
  • Ensure the course is in its own browser window and not within a frame of the school portal or email client
  • If on a wireless connection, try a wired connection
  • Reboot the computer
  • Disable all pop-up blockers and third-party toolbars
  • Try accessing the course from a different connection (computer lab, library, etc.)
  • Try accessing at a different time of day (during non-peak internet usage hours, e.g., morning)

If you have completed the program and need to have your hold removed, contact Lynne Cornelius, Lynne.Cornelus@drake.edu, Violence Prevention Coordinator at 515-271-4141 or the Dean of Students Office at 515-271-2835.
