Reporting to the President, the Provost oversees all academic programs, including seven colleges and schools, faculty hiring, development, promotion, and tenure; equity and inclusion; libraries; student success and retention; accreditation, institutional research and assessment; research, grants, and contracts; and online education.
Dr. Joseph M. Valenzano III
Dr. Joseph M. Valenzano III was appointed the University’s Provost and Chief Academic Officer on July 1, 2026. An accomplished academic leader and communication scholar, Dr. Valenzano oversees Drake’s seven colleges and schools. Recognized as a visionary and collaborative leader, Dr. Valenzano is dedicated to fostering academic innovation, promoting student success, and advancing Drake's mission-driven liberal arts education.
Dr. Valenzano brings more than 20 years of higher education experience to Drake, marked by a strong commitment to shared governance and experiential learning. He previously served as the Dean of the College of Communication at Butler University. Prior to his time at Butler, he spent over a decade at the University of Dayton in various leadership roles, including Department Chair and Academic Senate President.
Dr. Valenzano holds a bachelor’s degree from Providence College, master’s degree from University of Maine, and a doctorate degree from Georgia State University.
